Lt. Butz was leading a armored tank column across the Song Toy Loan River in the area of the Da Nang Air Base, when his tank dropped into a large hidden hole in the river. Robert was the Executive Officer of A Company serving under
Capt. J.B. Donovan.

Robert's religion was Protestant. He was married at the time of his death.
